Mississippian peoples throughout the Southeast were corn agriculturalists and, like farmers today, they needed special equipment. This, and thousands of other stone hoes found in the southeast, was fashioned from Mill Creek chert, from Union County, in southern Illinois. This particular kind of chert was especially well-suited for the production of large implements such as hoes. Dr. Hampson obtained this Mill Creek chert implement from a site in Mississippi County, Arkansas.
